More than 50 children in the Town of Huntington selected free Halloween costumes on Thursday, October 22. The event took place in the gymnasium of the John J. Flanagan Huntington Senior Center. Families did not pay a fee to choose outfits for their children.
The clothing came from a drive run by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi and Town Councilwoman Theresa Mari. Residents donated more than 300 costumes to their offices during October. The organizers stated that the collection effort was successful due to community participation.
Local school groups helped expand the supply of available outfits. The Parent Teacher Associations at Paumanok Elementary, Vanderbilt Elementary, and West Hollow Middle School in the Half Hollow Hills School District organized their own collections. These groups gathered items from students and parents to support the main drive.
Bontempi described the event as a time for the community to support families. She noted that watching children choose their costumes was rewarding. She expressed gratitude to the donors and volunteers who contributed to the project.
Mari said the giveaway showed how neighbors help one another in the town. She emphasized that every child should have the chance to enjoy the holiday. She thanked the people who gave their time and donated clothing.
The organizers also sent hundreds of remaining costumes to Tri-CYA in Huntington. This agency will allow additional local children to pick out costumes for themselves this Halloween. The event concluded with all 50 attending families leaving with selected outfits.
